EKYSY: Problems of thousands of retirees remain unsolved

The coronavirus pandemic, “in addition to causing serious problems for the elderly, who are forced to stay in their homes due to the decrees of the Ministry of Health, which has serious consequences for their health, at the same time led to them remaining unresolved “serious problems concerning thousands of retirees”, the Union of Cypriot Pensioners (EKYSY) states in an announcement.

However, EKYSY continues, in these circumstances it is not possible to achieve the organized reaction of the retirees through meetings and assemblies that were established by EKYSY all the previous years, before the pandemic.

Once the restrictions are lifted, EKYSY concludes, it will organize the annual meetings of local organizations and intensify its efforts to resolve the serious problems faced by retirees, such as the requirement to abolish the 12% penalty in the pensions of those who have claimed or will claim to receive a pension at the age of 63, the amendment of the legislation to entitle all widows to a widow's pension, the improvement of the legislation on the operation of shelters for the elderly and the operation of rehabilitation centers for people in need, after a serious health problem.
