The Council of Ministers, at its meeting today on June 21, 2023, approved an Amendment to the Regulation of Petrol Stations from 1972 to 1999, to allow the installation and use of charging-recharging points for electric vehicles at petrol stations, as part of the Government's transition policy in green energy.

According to a written statement by Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Doxa Komodromou on the decision of the Council of Ministers, she states that the Ministry of the Interior, following the political decision to promote electric mobility in Cyprus, investigated the issue of the legal installation of electric charging and recharging points of vehicles at gas stations, and held a public consultation on a draft prepared by the Technical Services – Administration of the Ministry of the Interior, for the revision of the legislative framework governing the operation of petrol stations.

According to the announcement, the revision of of the existing legislative framework aims to solve problems that could potentially be created by the installation of alternative fuel infrastructures that contribute to the promotion of electrification at existing or new petrol stations, in order to allow the installation and use of charging – recharging points for electric vehicles.

Furthermore, it is reported that this revision was considered essential and necessary, because the State, through the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, is promoting the use of electricity as a driving fuel for the future, so that consumers can power their vehicles in accessible public and private parking spaces.
