“He also tore my clothes, but I knew what I wanted to do”

An interview on the show “Pame Danae” was given by Eleni Dimou.

The well-known singer spoke to Aris Kavatzikis about the course her in the song, the meeting with her husband, the last statements of Giorgos Dalaras, while she shocked by revealing the abuse she received from her brother in order to stop the song.

Originally mentioned: “As a child I was a bit of a devil. I really wanted to sing. At the age of 11, my mother took me to Economides Talents, who said I would have a career. My mother had a beautiful voice, she saw her dreams come true in my face. My father and my brother did not want me to be a singer. I strained, I even ate wood from my brother to stop the singing. He also tore some of my clothes, but I knew what I wanted to do with my life”.

Then he added: “A company sees you as an investment and money. In a country like Greece, where folk song and bouzouki dominate, I still wonder how I managed to make a career with my own repertoire. If I said yes to folk song, I would have a huge fortune, I would have solved many problems that appeared in my life, but I don't know how I would sleep…

Consciously I didn't like to provoke on stage and have the thing escape from the feeling I wanted to give with my voice. Seeing my legs or my breasts meant nothing to me. I don't want to condemn my female colleagues who choose it, it's their right. I wanted them to focus on the feeling of my voice and the lyrics I was performing and not my image. Show some things if you want, but not to exaggerate and especially as we grow older. But Eleni Foureira is a charge by herself”.

Finally for her husband, Akis Golfidis confessed:“We were united by death with Akis Golfidis. James Brown would come to Greece for a concert. We had been arranging it for a long time and unfortunately my good friend, Giorgos Tselepidis, was killed in a traffic accident. I decided to go to the concert alone in memory of my friend who wanted it so much. There I met my husband and from then on we became inseparable.

We met for dinner with friends, an ERT journalist was in love with me. He sent me flowers and I said, “my husband thanks him”. My husband has put up with me for 37 years, he has not deprived me of my freedom. There was once a man who made me look at the wall so I wouldn't see anyone. We went through financial struggles with Akis, I never thought of not being by his side. We lost almost everything, but we didn't lose our love.”
