Emily Gioliti: The case of Andri Eleftheriou goes to the Attorney General - The Police do not interfere

Police are not obstructing and working very intensively, said today the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Emily Giolitis, in relation to reports of delays in the investigation of various allegations of sexual harassment or abuse.

Speaking in Pissouri, Limassol District, where she inspected the building that will house the new regional police station, the Minister said that “because I hear that sometimes there are delays, the Police do not interfere”.

“He is working very intensively, just each case has its own peculiarities and each case must be considered separately,” he said, adding that “does not mean that just because someone filed a complaint or testimony first, their case will be taken to court faster.” or to the Legal Service, if necessary “.

Regarding the file of the case of the shooting champion, Andris Eleftheriou, he said that it has been completed and it is expected that within the day it will be handed over to the Attorney General.

Asked to report on her concerns about the number of complaints coming to the police, she said she was concerned that “we have too many complaints in such a small society”.

“We see that Cyprus is not an international champion, but it is a global phenomenon. “But I am glad that so many fellow citizens find the courage to go out and talk,” he added.

Moreover, the Chief of Police, Stelios Papatheodorou, stated that “it is a fact that, after the first complaint that came to light, other persons from various places have reported similar incidents to the special unit operating at the Police Headquarters”.

“We attach great importance to the victims, to the witnesses, in order for the investigation to proceed smoothly and if there are any crimes, to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said, adding that “in no case has any delay been observed.”

In less than a month, he continued, some cases have been registered and he assured that “the intention is to forward, on the basis of the evidence, to the Legal Service or directly before the court, the suspects”.

Asked why a former MEP was not summoned to testify in connection with a similar complaint, Mr. Papatheodorou replied that “everything is done on time”.
