The Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade and Industry will ask the Minister of Finance for explanations after protests by entertainment and event companies, that despite the promises, they received little to cover the damage suffered during the pandemic.

The Pancyprian Association of Entertainment Centers, the Association of Technical Support of Events and the Pancyprian Association of & nbsp; Exhibition Organizing attended the meeting of the Committee on Tuesday.

According to the President of the Pancyprian Association of Entertainment Centers Nikos Vassilios, these companies are asking for an amount of around 2 to 2.5 million for the damages they have suffered. Of these, 30-40% relate to employees' salaries and the rest relate to running costs and rents to keep businesses afloat. He added that the losses of the sectors exceed 15-20 million but what they are asking for is the minimum they are entitled to and which was announced by the Minister of Finance and he did not keep his promise. & Nbsp;

As he told the Commission, out of the 62 weeks that their businesses remained closed, there are 32 weeks that were not compensated and they received a total of 617 thousand euros. He also noted that many of the companies have already knelt down and that the businessman went to prison for three months because he could not pay the social security of his employees in 2021, due to zero income. He spoke of mockery and ridicule.

The Ministry of Finance informed the Commission that the eligible companies that met the criteria received the amount of their support and in cases where they did not receive it, it is examined on a case-by-case basis. He added that there was no longer any room for promotion of projects related to the effects of the pandemic due to the situation with the effects of the war in Ukraine. & nbsp;

Asked by the Chairman of the Committee Kyriakos Hatzigiannis if a meeting was held with the Ministry of Finance, as requested by the Parliament, it was stated that no meeting was held, while Mr. Vassiliou said that at the Ministry of Finance, they refuse to see them. The Chairman of the Committee stated that the Minister of Finance would be summoned to the next meeting of the Committee.

In his statements after the end of the Committee, its Chairman and DISY MP, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis said that while there was a calculation agreed upon, then there was no response, so that the aid would cover the agreed amount. He also expressed regret that the ministries involved did not consult with the affected parties to find a solution.

AKEL MP Costas Costa spoke of a cry of despair in the sector that has been irreparably affected by the pandemic. He said that the owners of the entertainment centers are still waiting for the compensatory compensations that the state owes them. The worst, he added, is that the representative of the Ministry. Finance clarified that the Government, which did not consult with the parties involved, is not going to provide any additional financial support, revoking its agreement with the owners of the entertainment centers. He appealed to the Government to change the decision and support the leisure center industry.

EDEK MP Elias Myrianthous said that in the last two years of the pandemic this sector has suffered a complete disaster and the compensation they received was not as expected as the initial announcements of the Ministry of Finance and that there was a big difference in the issue. He said the government should immediately pay the remaining amount as was the original promise of the state to these companies and should be urged by the Ministry of Finance, the Government and the Central Bank to stop the sale or bankruptcy of these companies.

DIPA MP Michalis Giakoumi called on the Government not only to immediately implement what it has agreed with the specific professionals, but also to provide additional support in order to give itself the time for a more unified planning. which will touch the problem in its entirety. He asked the Government to include the amount of 1,500,000 euros for compensatory compensations to this sector and another 1,000,000 for the events and exhibition sectors, which are an integral part of our tourism product, & nbsp; in order to save businesses and a large number of jobs.
