Cyprus to face the challenges of the climate crisis, in particular, in the energy sector (production, distribution and consumption) should consider and invest in practices that come from the field of research and innovation, he said Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou.

He added that environmental policies have already been established and what is needed is effective implementationand their enforcement and this can be achieved through strengthening the legal framework, monitoring systems and cooperation between all competent bodies and organizations.

The Commissioner participated last Friday in a panel on “Energy, Green Development and Environment”, in the framework of a Conference organized by the Research and Innovation Foundation (IdEK).

On the need for energy transition to RES,he said that this presupposes the immediate creation of an energy ecosystem, in which agencies, organized groups and individuals can participate in order to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

At the same time, he added, the linking research centers with businesses, industry, the academic community and with public bodies as well as the promotion and support of energy communities.

The Commissioner said that innovative solutions should also be found for energy storage from production RES but also to establish partnerships with other countries for the purposes of energy security and stability.

He referred to solar photovoltaic and wind systems which are particularly efficient, however, he emphasized, innovative technologies are required for targeted dispersed production, distribution and storage as well as drawing up a spatial strategy.

Referring to the issue of natural gas, Mrs. Theodosiou said that although it should not be our first priority, it can be used as a transitional fuel.
