The Equality trade union expresses its disappointment with its announcement about the Parliament's decision to vote on Regulation 5, which concerns the right of state employees to free treatment in state hospitals, for services not covered by the NHS. The union says this is “unprecedented and anti-union institutional action by the Legislature.”

“As EQUALITY we will exhaust every legal means to cancel this unfair, unilateral and therefore illegal regulation”, the announcement states and calls on the Parliament to “correct the injustice”, while at the same time “calling on all Trade Unions with affected employees and pensioners to enlist”.

As the guild explains, the vote in favor of the amendment tabled by the Democratic Alarm to Regulation 5 of the Civil Service (Medical Examinations and Medical Treatment) Regulations 2024, “takes away from thousands of state employees, pensioners and the members of their families the until now reserved right to medical care from the state hospitals for services not covered by the NHS”.

He then notes that “despite the fact that they were already entitled to this benefit, the civil servants accepted a cut for the NHS, so that society as a whole would benefit and the system would become sustainable”. It also underlines that there was no prior consultation or even information of the affected and their trade unions, noting that this “constitutes a flagrant contempt for the institutions of social dialogue and labor acquired decades”.
