Espionage against journalists, activists opposed to the Israeli company PEGASUS software

Activists, journalists, oppositionists and dissidents around the world have fallen victim to espionage thanks to software created by the Israeli company NSO Group, according to a survey of 17 major media outlets published in the international press, reinforcing previous reports.

The investigation, published in the international media, including the French newspaper Le Monde, the British The Guardian and the American The Washington Post, calls into even greater doubt the credibility of the NSO. Their research was based on a list provided by the Forbidden Stories collective and the non-governmental organization Amnesty International, which includes 50,000 telephone numbers targeted by NSO customers since 2016 to be monitored.

Founded in 2011 in Tel Aviv, the company has commercially available Pegasus software, which, after being unknowingly installed on any smartphone, allows the interception of messages, photos, contacts, and calls that can be recorded after the microphones are secretly activated.

These include at least 180 journalists, 600 politicians, men and women, 85 human rights defenders, and 65 business leaders. They emerged from a media consortium investigation that identified several figures in Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Mexico.

According to the findings of the investigation so far, an Israeli company, NSO, took care to supply governments with special malware to monitor the phones of about 50,000 people.

The company, in a statement, denies having committed any crime and stresses that the software is suitable for use in military and police services against criminals and terrorists. However, she could not answer the question how her software was found on the mobile phones of hundreds of journalists.
