In Cyprus in 2011 7 drownings were recorded, with the number showing a transient increase in 2014 (15) and 2018 (16).
There was an increase in drowning deaths in 2021 in the EU compared to 2020, while in Cyprus the number fell from 14 to 9, according to data published by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office.
In particular, there were 5004 drowning deaths in the EU in 2021, 532 more than in 2020 (4472). The share of drowning and diving deaths in total accidental deaths also increased slightly from 2.9% in 2020 to 3.1% in 2021.
However, this share was significantly lower than 4.2% recorded in 2011, reflecting an almost constant decrease over the last 10 years.

Among Member States, in 2021 the highest number of drowning deaths was reported in Romania (1033), which had 21% of all EU drowning deaths, followed by France ( 653), Poland (466) and Germany (457). The lowest numbers were recorded in Luxembourg (1), Malta (3) and Cyprus (9).
In 2021, drowning deaths among men were more than double those among women in almost all countries of the EU. The only exceptions were Austria (33 men, 19 women) and Malta (1 man and 2 women).
