A critical upgrade of Nicosia’s sewer network, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP ), is set to begin.

The project aims to replace aging asbestos pipes in three sections of the “Trunk E” network, essential for public health and environmental safety.

The project encompasses three sections: the town area, the UN Buffer Zone, and the eastern section leading to the wastewater treatment plant.

Work will commence in the town section, focusing on an 846-meter stretch along Mehmet Akif Avenue (Dereboyu). This area extends from the beginning of Kumsal Park to the end of the shopping mall (Gültekin Şengör Street turnoff).

The town section, valued at approximately €1 million, is scheduled between June 15 and September 15, 2024. This phase is crucial to mitigate immediate risks and ensure uninterrupted wastewater management.

Judit Rozsa, Acting Director-General for Structural Reform Support at the European Commission stated that “these works are critical to safely bring wastewater generated by all the people of Nicosia to the bicommunal Nicosia Wastewater Treatment Plant, where it can be properly treated. Both the sewerage network and the Wastewater Treatment Plant are evidence of a good partnership between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for almost 40 years. The European Commission is pleased to support this joint effort, which facilitates the reunification of Cyprus”.

Originally built in 1986 as a joint effort by Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Trunk E utilized asbestos pipes.

A 2km section was replaced in 2000 due to deterioration, and the remaining sections are now in critical condition, with the potential for collapse.

Emergency repairs have been made, but a total of 4,200 meters of pipes require replacement to prevent future hazards.
