Eurobarometer: Poverty and accuracy are the biggest issues for EU voters

Thepoverty and social exclusion are the number one issue of concern to European voters, the European Parliament's latest Eurobarometer has shown before the June elections.

After poverty comes public health, jobs, defense, security and the climate crisis. According to the Eurobarometer, the immigranthas ceased to be the number one priority of the citizens of the bloc, despite the promotion of the issue in the media and the political campaign carried out by the right-wing and especially the far-right parties in the last year.What the Eurobarometer data show

European public opinion poses poverty and the crisis of cost of living,as well as social exclusion as the sub’ number one issue for voters going to the polls in early June to elect the new European Parliament.

The fight against poverty and social exclusion (33%) as well as public health (32%) are the main issues that concern voters at the European level. The corresponding percentages in Greece are 55% and 56%, while 55% mention supporting the economy and creating new jobs as a priority.

<p>For voters in Italy, where irregular migration across the Mediterranean from Tunisia skyrocketed last year, along with those in Hungary, Portugal, Romania and Slovakia, the top priority is jobs and supporting the economy.</p>
<p>Immigration and Ukraine were listed as the top two issues for voters in the latest survey published in December.</p>
<p><strong>Emphasis on defense and security</strong></p >
<p>European citizens put <strong>defense</strong> and <strong>security</strong>(37%) as first priorities for strengthening the EU's position on the world stage. This is followed by energy issues on the one hand and food security and agriculture on the other with 30% in both categories.</p>
<p>In Greece, respondents consider the strengthening of EU competitiveness, economy and industry as priorities (38 %), food security and agriculture (36%) and energy (35%).</p>
<p><strong>The role of the EU</strong></p>
<p>Although four in ten citizens say that the EU's role has become more important in recent years, 35% believe that it has remained stable and 22% that it has weakened.</p>
<p>At national level, relative majorities in 15 countries believe that the EU's role in the world has grown stronger over the years, with figures reaching 67% in Sweden, 63% in Portugal and 60% in Denmark.</p>
<p>On the other hand of the spectrum, Slovenian and Czech citizens are more likely to say that the role of the EU has become less important (32% and 30%, respectively).</p><source srcset=

<p><strong>8 out of 10 Greeks believe that the EU has an impact on everyday life</strong></p>
<p>Approximately 4 out of 10 respondents in Greece believe that either the European Union's contribution to the global political scene has become more important (38%) or that it has remained stable compared to the past (43%), while around 2 in 10 believe that it has become less important (18%).</p>
<p>Almost three quarters of citizens (73%, +3 percentage points compared to autumn 2023) claim that EU actions have an impact on their daily lives, including a fifth (20%) who say they have a very high impact . Furthermore, a large majority of Europeans agree that their country, overall, benefits from EU membership (71%). These results are stable compared to autumn 2023 and remain high across the EU. For Greece, the percentage of citizens who consider EU actions to have an impact on their daily lives is 83%, while 70% of the respondents claims that the country has benefited overall from joining the EU.</p>
