Euromobility for the Cyprus issue

Euromobility for the Cyprus issue

Nicosia wants mobility not only from the United Nations but also from the European Union. Two contacts by President Anastasiadis later this week are considered particularly important in the efforts of the Cypriot government to bring the European Union into the Cyprus process. Two of the factors that can play an important and decisive role in what has to do with European involvement in efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. The German Chancellor and the High Representative of the European Union can set the stage for EU involvement in the Cyprus issue.

President Anastasiadis will hold a teleconference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel next Thursday. According to our information, the Anastaiadis-Merkel communication will move on two axes: first, the developments in the Cyprus issue and the role that the EU could play in helping the whole process, taking into account the European dimension of the problem, and second, the Euro-Turkish and the Summit on 25 March. For Nicosia, the European Council is seen as a good opportunity to send messages to make Ankara more cooperative in its efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.

The next day, the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, whose mission to the island is twofold, will go up the hill. On the one hand, he will discuss with the officials of the Republic of Cyprus (President Anastasiadis and Foreign Minister Christodoulidis) issues related to the March Summit, in view of the preparation of his report on Turkey, which will include Ankara's behavior in the Eastern Mediterranean. On the other hand, he will discuss the Cyprus issue and the new effort launched by the UN Secretary General and the five-day summit in Geneva on April 27-29. In this context, Josep Borrell will also meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

What Nicosia seeks is the European presence in the whole process of the Cyprus issue and not only in the final conference. The main thing that wants at this time is the European Union to take a position in relation to the form of solution to the Cyprus problem. What Nicosia primarily seeks and will be emphasized by Lofos, both in the teleconference with Merkel and during Borrell's visit, is for the EU itself to respond to Ankara's demands regarding the form of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

In particular, the Cypriot government expects that the message from the EU will be sent to Ankara that the solution sought by the Turkish side – a solution of two states with sovereign equality – can not be accepted by Europe. A message that Nicosia itself has heard coming from European mouths and expects to be conveyed with the same intensity and tone in the direction of Turkey.

The Presidency estimates that if they manage to persuade Merkel and Borrell to take a position on the Cyprus issue, then it will be decisive for how the EU in general will see the developments and its involvement.

Answer to Guterres: He says he is ready for Geneva
