Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful cities to visit in Europe in December is the capital of Hungary, Budapest, and this year there is an additional reason to rank it high in your preferences, as according to a European Best Destinations survey, Budapest is home to Europe's best Christmas market for the year 2022.

In particular, the Advent Feast at St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest is the best Christmas market in Europe for 2022. With especially cold temperatures at this time of year and the magical nights succeeding early to the short days, Budapest every Christmas looks like a vast fairy tale, with imaginative decorations and colored lights placed wherever one can – and cannot – imagine and a festive, melodious atmosphere to be found everywhere in the city.

However, if it's one thing that makes the city a top destination every December, it's its unique Christmas markets, and whether you're in Buda on one side of the river or Pest on the other, the Hungarian capital promises to reward you with unique, authentic and immersive Christmas experiences. experiences that are said to be remembered forever. Ice rinks, mulled wine and traditional delicacies from Hungarian cuisine make up the ideal setting to get into the Christmas spirit.

In the award-winning St. Stephen's Square, countless wooden houses are scattered over a large area, and visitors, after completing their walk around the ice rink, have the opportunity to find authentic Hungarian souvenirs and taste some of the best-known Hungarian wines and the finest traditional delicacies. Here you will also find the delicious lentil soups traditionally made in the country.

On the main stage of the square, concerts and activities for young and old take place every day, while the trademark is the huge Christmas tree that is erected every year in the middle of the square, causing awe and admiration. It is said, however, that what makes this particular market stand out are the animation projections that appear every day on the facade of the Basilica of St. Stefanou and which change every thirty minutes.

It is worth noting that the impressive basilica of St. Stefanou is the largest church in Hungary. A little further down from the square, there is the so-called Deák Ferenc Street, which is the fashion street and one of the most commercial streets in the city, where with refinement and style the Christmas atmosphere is transferred to the interiors of small boutiques and shops.
