Eurostat: Cyprus low in the use of renewables in transport in 2020, but with a large increase compared to 2019

The European Union has achieved its target of a 10% share of renewable energy sources in transport by 2020 (a target that includes liquid biofuels, biomethane and “green” electricity), according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

Cyprus is among the countries with the lowest rate of use of renewable energy sources in transport, as it is at 7.4%. However, this is the country in which the fourth largest increase was recorded among the Member States compared to 2019.

In 2013 the percentage was at 1.1%, it moved between 2.5% and 2.7% in the period 2014 to 2018, recording a significant increase in 2019 to 3.3% and again in 2020 to 7.4%.

According to the data available for 2020, the average rate of use of renewable energy sources in transport in the 27 Member States increased from 1.6% in 2004 to 10.2% in 2020, slightly exceeding the target by 0.2 percentage points.

A total of 12 Member States exceeded the 10% target. In first place with a difference in 2020 was Sweden with 31.9%. It was followed by Finland (13.4%) and the Netherlands and Luxembourg (both 12.6%). As Eurostat explains, Sweden's primacy is explained by the high use of biofuels that comply with EU regulations.

Greece (5.3%) and Lithuania (5.5%) were in the lowest positions in the EU in 2020, with Cyprus being in 6th place from the end.

In 2020, all Member States recorded an increase in the rate of use of renewable energy sources compared to 2019, with the exception of France (stagnant at 9.2%) and Finland (decrease of 0.9 percentage points).

The largest increases were recorded in Estonia (5.9 percentage points), Luxembourg (4.9 percentage points), Belgium (4.2 percentage points) and Cyprus (4.1 percentage points).
