Eurostat: Significant increase in funds for research and development in Cyprus

<p>By 19.8% increased in 2023 in Cyprus (compared to 5.3% on average in the EU) in relation to 2022 the funds available through the state budget for research and development (research & development – R&amp ;D), according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.</p>
<p>In particular, in 2023 the total state budget appropriations for research and development across the EU amounted to 123,684 billion euros, corresponding to 0.73% of the GDP of the European Union, increasing by 5.3% compared to 2022 (117,424 billion euros) and by 54.8% compared to 2013 (79,886 billion euros) .</p>
<p>In Cyprus, R&D expenditure in 2023 amounted to 138,024 million euros, corresponding to 0.46% of the country's GDP. The amount increased by 19.8% compared to 2022 (115,225 million euros) and by 128.9% compared to 2013 (60,297 million euros).</p>
<p>In proportion to population, the 2023 state budget appropriations for research and development in the EU amounted to €275.6 per person, an increase of 53.3% compared to 2013 (€181.0 per person).</p>
<p>In Cyprus, the state budget appropriations for research and development stood at 149.9 euros per person, marking an increase of 114.4% compared to 2013 (69.6 euros per person).</p>
<p>The highest funds per population ratio in 2023 were recorded in Luxembourg (€646.6 per person), Denmark (€552.4) and Germany (€529.3).</p>
<p>EU countries with the lowest funds per person were Romania (21.2 euros per person), Bulgaria (33.1 euros) and Hungary (48.1 euros).</p>
<p>Between 2013 and 2023, almost all EU Governments increased their budget appropriations for research and development in terms of euros per person.</p>
<p>The largest percentage increases were recorded in Latvia (+291% from 16, 0 euro per person in 2013 to 62.6 euro in 2023), Poland (+147% from 37.8 to 93.3 euro) and Bulgaria (+133% from 14.2 to 33.1 euro). Hungary was the only EU country to record a decrease (-28% from 66.9 to 48.1 euros).</p>
<p>Of the funds directed to research and development in the EU in 2023, the largest proportion (35.5%) was for the general promotion of knowledge, for which many public higher education institutions receive support through public general university funds.</p >
<p>17.3% of funds were for the general promotion of knowledge but funds from sources other than public funds, 11.0% of funds were for industrial production and technology, 6.9% for health, 6.0 % space exploration and exploitation, 5.3% energy, 3.9% defense, 2.9% transport, 2.9% agriculture, 2.4% environment, 1.8% education, 1.8% land exploration and exploitation, 1.6% political and social systems, structures and processes, and 0.9% culture, entertainment, religion and media.</p>
<p> In Cyprus, the largest percentage (65.5%) concerned the promotion of knowledge from sources other than public funds, 21.4% of the funds the promotion of knowledge through said funds, 5.4% health, 5.0 % agriculture and 1.6% education. The rest of the categories corresponded to percentages lower than 0.5%.</p>
