Unemployment by gender and among young people

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Cyprus fell slightly to 6.4% in February 2024, from 6.6% in January, while remaining stable compared to February 2023, according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
At the eurozone level, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February 2024 stood at 6.5%, unchanged from January 2024 and down from 6 .6% in February 2023.
In the EU the figure stood at 6.0% in February 2024, also flat compared to January 2024 and compared to February 2023.
In absolute numbers, Eurostat estimates show 13.249 million unemployed in the EU, of which 11.102 million in the euro area, in February 2024.
Compared to January 2024, unemployment fell by 13 thousand in the EU and increased by 17 thousand in the eurozone. Compared to February 2023, unemployment increased by 156 thousand in the EU and decreased by 30 thousand in the eurozone.
In Cyprus in absolute numbers unemployment decreased by approximately 1000 people in February compared to January (32 thousand from 33 thousand) while it increased by about 1000 people compared to February 2023 (from 31 thousand).
Unemployment per gender
In February 2024, the unemployment rate among women was 6.4% in the EU, unchanged from January 2024, and the unemployment rate for men was 5.7%, up from 5.8% the previous month.
In the eurozone, the unemployment rate for women was 6.9% and the unemployment rate for men was 6.1%, both flat compared to January of 2024.
In Cyprus, the unemployment rate among women stood at 6.1%, from 6.3% the previous month, and among men at 6.7%, from 6.9% the previous month.
Youth unemployment
In February 2024, 2.899 million young people (under 25) were unemployed in the EU, of which 2.319 million in the eurozone.
In February 2024, the youth unemployment rate was 14.8% in the EU, up from 14.9% in January 2024, and 14.6% in the eurozone, stable compared to the previous month.
Compared to January 2024, youth unemployment fell by 13k in the EU and by 4k in the eurozone.
Compared to February 2023, youth unemployment increased by 174 thousand in the EU and by 91 thousand in the eurozone.
For Cyprus there are no updated data on youth unemployment, as Cyprus is among the countries that provide data on a quarterly basis.
