Seasonally adjusted unemployment in the euro area fell to 7.4% in September this year, compared to 7.5% in August and 8.6% in September 2020, while the corresponding index for the EU fell to 6.7%. % from 6.9% in August and 7.7% in September 2020, according to updates released by Eurostat, the EU statistical office.

In Cyprus, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.6% in September this year, compared to 4.4% in August and 9.1% in September last year.

Eurostat estimates that 14.324 million people in the EU, of which 12.079 million in the eurozone, were unemployed in September 2021.

The number of unemployed fell by 306 thousand people in the EU and by 255 thousand in the eurozone in September compared to August. Compared to September last year, the number of unemployed decreased by 2.054 million people in the EU and by 1.919 million people in the eurozone.

In September, 16 thousand unemployed people were registered in Cyprus. Compared to August the number of unemployed decreased by 3 thousand, while compared to September last year decreased by 25 thousand.

Among young people (under 25), 2.815 million people in the EU were registered as unemployed in September, of which 2.307 million in the eurozone.

The unemployment rate in the EU in September was 15.9% in the EU and 16.0% in the eurozone, having decreased compared to the previous month when the rates were at 16.1% and 16.3% respectively.

Compared to August, youth unemployment fell by 45,000 in the EU and by 38,000 in the eurozone.

Compared to September last year, youth unemployment fell by 375 thousand people in the EU and by 348 thousand people in the eurozone.

In Cyprus, the seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate was 6.8% (2 thousand people), unchanged compared to August, and reduced compared to September last year when it was 20.9% (7 thousand). ).

Unemployment among women was also at 7.0% in the EU in September, compared with 7.2% in August. Unemployment among men was at 6.5%, compared with 6.6% in August.

In the eurozone, unemployment among women fell from 7.9% in August to 7.7% in September, while unemployment among men fell from 7.2% to 7.1% over the same period.

In Cyprus, unemployment among women was 4.1% in September, compared to 5.0% in August and 9.0% last September. Unemployment among men stood at 3.2%, compared with 3.8% in August and 9.2% last September.

Eurostat notes that its estimates are based on the International Labor Organization (ILO) definition of unemployment, according to which unemployed are unemployed people who have been actively looking for work for the last four weeks and can start working within the next two weeks. .

The coronavirus pandemic has reportedly led to a sharp rise in unemployment benefits, but a significant number of those registered with the unemployment funds were no longer actively looking for work or were not available to work, including due to obligations such as raising children. This leads to differences in the numbers of those who have been declared unemployed and those who are considered unemployed under the ILO definition.
