Pressure is being exerted in Parliament not to approve the bill of the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, which seeks to put a brake on the extra charges that some small businesses impose on consumers, when they pay by credit cards, on the pretext that their profit margin is small from some products.

Next Thursday, the 17th of the month, the bill will be presented to the Plenary and as it seems they gain the required majority to be approved.

The new kiosk association (NESYPE), in a letter to the members of the Trade Committee, requests that the kiosks be exempted from the legislation, as, as they claim, the mandatory acceptance of credit cards will cause objective difficulties in their businesses. “The majority of the kiosks accepted cards before the adoption of this legislation, but there was a possibility to refuse, if the products or services that the consumer wanted were low-profit”, notes the president of the Association Spyros Xynaris, pointing out that they have no problem accepting credit cards. According to him, what bothers them is the obligation of the measure, which will create many problems.

According to the kiosk owners, when they make sales with credit cards there are products and services whose profit margin is from 0.7% – 1.0%. At the same time, they note that for 70% of the products they sell the profit margin is from 2.5% to 7%, while the prices of many products, such as cigarettes, the press and phone cards are predetermined. At the same time, they claim that the cost of each credit card transaction ranges from 1.2% to 2.5%.

It is reminded that the first draft law defines the Consumer Protection Service as a competent authority, to which consumers can turn when they find over-indebtedness. The legislation provides for the imposition of an administrative fine of up to € 2 thousand, while in case of continuation of the violation, a fine of € 100 will be imposed for each day of the violation. Moreover, with the second proposal, the fine is increased from € 2 thousand to € 4 thousand to companies that do not accept credit card payments.
