A. Petrov has dual citizenship, of Russia and Germany, and Russian diplomats have already requested a phone call and a meeting with him, as reported.
As TASS reports, the US Department of Justice announced on August 9 that Petrov was extradited to the US and brought before a US court on a total of 11 charges, each of which is punishable by 5 to 20 years in prison.
It is also reported that the 34-year-old A. Petrov was arrested in Cyprus on August 26, 2023, at the request of Washington, and that according to the American Department of Justice “he was allegedly a member of a network”, which, after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine is accused of carrying out “illegal export of a large amount of microelectronic equipment” for the needs of a Russian company, as reported by TASS, noting that according to the US government's claim “this activity was carried out to circumvent US restrictions on shipments of certain types of high-tech equipment technology to Russia”.
As TASS notes, A. Petrov stated from the beginning that he considers his case “politically motivated” and that he is being prosecuted simply because he is a “Russian businessman”.
