Interview to Socrates Joachim/Photos: Antonis G. Antoniou

He is considered by many and not unjustly as his father catering in Cyprus, while from 1997 until today he holds the position of general secretary of the Pancyprian Association of Leisure Center Owners. The story of Fano Leventis whom we met at Café go healthy in Nicosia and discussed the most important moments from the book of his life.

He was born on August 27, 1960 in occupied Vatili and is the third in a row and the only son of the four children of Nikos Leventis and Ourania Theofanous. & nbsp;

“My father worked as a foreman in a company. Initially he worked in Dhekelia and then he was a caretaker of Cybarco in Famagusta for the big project of construction of the sewer. Famagusta 50 years ago had a sewer and some other areas even today do not, which shows how far ahead it was as a city for its time. My mother was a housewife and took care of me and my three sisters. “We did not live in poverty or with special deprivations as we are a family of the so-called middle class,” he said.

Primary

He attended primary school in Vatili and was excellent as a student. “I really liked the lesson of Modern Greek and Geography. I remember when we were writing a report, I was writing a total of eight pages as opposed to the average of my other classmates which was one page. “In elementary school, I was also involved in sports, specifically in athletics, where I excelled in the 60 meters, long jump and football,” he underlined. He remembers everything from the occupied village as he told us. “I remember 400 students attended elementary school. I enjoyed the countryside of the village and the many orchards. I remember the figs and the pomegranates and the endless plains with the saplings, and Vatili's special product, the clover. At that time, a factory operated as a clover dryer, preparing animal feed. A characteristic of Vatili was the many buses she had “, he stressed.

The & nbsp; High School, the invasion and England

High school, attended the Solution & nbsp; the first two years and then & nbsp; in 1974 the Turkish invasion took place. “I was also an excellent student in the High School and I had very beautiful memories from the High School of Lysis, both from the teachers and from my classmates with whom I kept in touch for several years after the war. Unfortunately, due to the invasion, I was taught Greek until I was 14 years old. The coup and the war found me working at a gas station in Nicosia. My father left like many other Cypriots abroad for work and my mother considered it good for me to go to England where we had relatives. I stayed in London for a month and then ended up in Manchester where I stayed for three years going to school and working on weekends in restaurants to cover some of my personal expenses. I played a lot of football both at the school I attended and with the Cypriot team in the parish. I played as a right winger and I was the first scorer of the team “. He returned to Cyprus in 1977, initially trying to finish school at the Pancyprian High School. & nbsp; “Unfortunately, due to the problems I had with my Greek, I graduated from a private business school. “At the same time I was working in a hotel in Nicosia where I believe it was the reason why I put an end to my career and the dreams I had to become a footballer”, he said.

Military service

In 1978 he first joined the 386th Infantry Battalion to serve his military service as an anti-aircraft gunner. He remained there for 5 months, as he later joined the National Guard Officers' Club, first as a waiter for General Komnenos and then as head of the Club's offices. “Memories from the Army will always remain in our memory. The Army is a living society that creates both controversy and friendship. A confrontation I had at the time provoked a hostile attitude from an officer where he sent me unfavorable postings to critical chapters with long hours of watch and during the day and night. “

The move to Athens & nbsp;

On September 12, 1980, he received his dismissal from the Army and the next day he was in Athens. & nbsp; “I went to study tourism but in a very short time through a collaboration I concluded I opened my first store in Athens. It was a cafe in a very beautiful area of Athens. & Nbsp; From this place, I remember that I had received it in a miserable condition with very few customers. I managed with the right moves to take off the space, which was a pole of attraction for its visitors. “I also had as a client the late Greek director Giannis Dalianidis, through whom several well-known actors such as Stamatis Gardelis and Sofia Aliberti came to my shop”, he pointed out. In 1981 he left the area to create a piano restaurant in Athens which operated until the end of 1983. & nbsp; “I remember the process of setting up the store which again managed to attract a select clientele,” he said. Shortly before his return to Cyprus he also worked as a chef in a hotel in Cephalonia for a few months.

Return to Cyprus & nbsp;

He returned to Cyprus at the beginning of 1984, initially to rest until he returned to Athens, but when we make plans, God laughs. “I was employed at Lapatsa for a year as the manager of her restaurant. I had the good fortune and the blessing to meet the late Gogos Paraskevaidis from whom I received great love and appreciation for my person. Then I decided to operate a small space of my own initially as a pizzeria and then I moved to another larger space in the area of Pallouriotissa where Cimarosa was set up, which developed into a very innovative tavern for the time and through a creative Mediterranean “Kitchen combined with high quality music held the scepter in place for almost three decades,” he said. Upon my arrival in Cyprus and with the creation of my own space, Fanos Leventis had started to offer catering services which were unknown at that time and many, hearing this terminology, asked him if he had written a book on the subject to procure it. “Many call me the father of catering in Cyprus. Cimarosa hosted the President of the Republic of Cyprus and foreign officials at the site and was a point of reference as it stood out for its good food. At that time I also got my diploma in Food & amp; “Beverage and I remember that many who studied as chefs visited the place to see up close and learn from the success of the place”, he said.

The involvement & nbsp; in & nbsp; PASIKA

The Pancyprian Association of Leisure Center Owners (PASIKA) entered its life in 1994. After many blows received by officials of the Association, it initially decided to become a member. & nbsp; “Very soon I had the position of Assistant Secretary General, while in 1997 I took over the position of Secretary General, a position I hold to this day, either through electoral procedures or through unanimous decisions of the members. & nbsp; More than 2,500 members are registered in the PASIKA archive today. It is the largest and oldest association in the industry, since it has been operating since 1981 and has members in all provinces. PASIKA for me is a very big and important part of my life which also affected my professional activity. This was the reason why I gradually lost my business, as the hours I dedicate to the Association are too many every day and the personal costs are huge. But from the beginning, when I took this position, I aimed to act in a fair way, always setting aside my own interests. I wanted and I want the Association to have dignity and recognition from society. “The Association has never remained only in its trade union role, since many times through collaborations or on its own, it has contributed through activities in charitable institutions”, he underlined.

In the meantime, as he told us, PASIKA cooperated with countries in the Southeastern Mediterranean, where the Euro-Mediterranean Restaurant Federation was established under the name EMRF, with him retaining the position of Vice President. “Unfortunately, the activities of the Organization froze due to the political problems that arose in the region,” he said.

Politics & nbsp; and & nbsp; APOEL

Although he was once a candidate for municipal councilor in Nicosia, he emphasizes that today he can not say that there is a political faction that fully expresses its positions. “There is a political vacuum that represents what I believe. I disagree with the capitalist approach to economics. I believe in man and in the possibilities he must have to create and grow. Although I do not believe that the state should operate as an entrepreneur, I nevertheless believe that the state should have increased responsibilities in relation to its supervisory role. I believe in a mixed economy model, I am strongly against bureaucracy and certainly against phenomena like those of multiple pensions. “As PASIKA, we cooperate with all parties to defend the interests of our members,” he said. Although he has enough free time, he states that he likes to travel and watch as much as he can my favorite team, APOEL. “I have concerns about football and in fact 30 years ago I wrote an article about the need for the current VAR”, he says with a smile…

Personality he admires & nbsp;

According to Fanos Leventis, today in Cyprus we do not have politicians who can read the international political field. The exception was the late former President of the Republic of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides. I admired him because he told the raw truth to the people. “Despite the fact that Turkey has the absolute responsibility for the non-solution of the Cyprus problem, I believe that we have made political mistakes over time which have led our national problem to such a point that it can very hardly be overthrown,” he said.

Family & nbsp;

He met his wife Maria Michael, originally from Pedoulas, in 1987 and was happy to have three daughters, Christina, Rania and Nikola. & nbsp; “My wife runs a small clothing store in Strovolos. “My eldest daughter works as a lawyer in the EU, Rania works in an auditing firm in Paris and my youngest works as a lawyer in Cyprus,” he said.

Motto expressing him & nbsp; & nbsp; b>

When asked which motto expresses him, he felt the need to expand. “To look up, but to remain humble and down to earth. To have as a measure of comparison your best in order to improve. This is something I used to say to all three of my daughters. I also avoid using the phrase and not worse, as I always see the glass half full and I am as a person by nature optimistic “, he underlined.

Goals & nbsp; Decade

Finally, in terms of the goals he has set for the next decade, he emphasized the freedom of his spirit. “Without being rich, I made a conscious decision and I want to continue it and be more free and comfortable for the next decade. Although I'm getting older, I'll like to stay young in my thinking. I see each day separately and I do not like to make long-term plans. I want to continue to train and improve as a person “, he concluded.
