For this weekend we suggest a one-day or even two-day trip to Kampia Orinis, an area that offers plenty of activities for people of all ages and interests.
Up the road to Macheira and after passing the Workers, the Episcopio and Pera we will enter the community of Kampia, which is a small village of the Orini district located at approximately 475 meters altitude.
It is said that the village got its name from the many small plains in the area and you might find it interesting to know that the big river that crosses Nicosia, the Pediaos, joins here with another river, the Onoufrios and together they become one with the Tamasou Dam, which in itself is reason enough to visit the area in the meantime.
As a settlement, Kampia has existed for a long time, but the current village, located on a small plateau, was built about a hundred years ago when the dusty soil of the old settlement began to suffer subsidence from the rains.
According to a popular version, Archbishop Kyprianos was born in Kampia in 1756 and his presence there is linked to the … fight against locusts, through the image of Saint Tryphon, patron of agriculture, which he offered to the community. Popular in the previous century among the inhabitants of Kampia was the art of basket weaving.
Of course, a significant percentage was also employed in the area's mines, from where unusual landscapes such as the Red Lake have emerged, giving you the illusion that you are on another planet. A lake which is another point of interest to visit and which was created after many years of digging for copper and iron pyrite.
