Female directors and actors dominated the awards ceremony of the 69th San Sebastian Film Festival.

Romanian actress Alina Grigore, who first tested her directing skills, won the Golden Shell, Best Picture Award for “Blue Moon”.

The film, an honestly realistic study of a young woman trying to free herself from the violent family environment in the countryside, unexpectedly won a prize, leaving behind films of higher profile creators at the Festival.

This is the second consecutive year that the top prize of the Festival is awarded to a female director. Last year, Georgian screenwriter-director Dea Kouloubegashvili won the award for her first film “Beginning”, which also won top awards for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Screenplay.

Dea Kouloubegashvili returned to the San Sebastian Film Festival this year as the head of a predominantly female jury – which also featured the French director and recently awarded the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival by Ondrea H documentaries by Maite Alberti, Spanish actress Suzy Sanchez and American producer Ted Hope.
