FIKOS: Me and My Monkey

Fikos

The Edit Gallery is pleased to welcome Fikos for his second solo exhibition at the gallery titled “Me and My Monkey”.

This fascinating exhibition opens on May 24th and will run until June 22nd, inviting art enthusiasts on a captivating journey into the depths of the human soul.
Fikos, a pioneer Greek visual artist renowned for his unique style of painting, which has been established as “Contemporary Byzantine Painting”, presents a collection of works that seamlessly blend elements of Byzantine art, graffiti aesthetics, and contemporary expressionism.

Inspired by the eponymous song by Robbie Williams, “Me and My Monkey”, the artist explores the ongoing struggle between modern social norms and primal instincts, attempting to pinpoint where the modern man clashes with what he calls the ” 8220;little monkey”—the part of the brain that has not fully adapted to contemporary, often unnatural ways of life.

Through a series of impressive artworks, he presents a zoological garden of hybrid creatures originating from imagination, nature, and the animal kingdom. Each creature symbolizes different aspects of our innate desires and instincts. In this almost allegorical manner, the artist speaks about the evolution of consciousness, from our prehistoric roots to the creation of modern civilization, inviting us to delve into the complexity of human existence.

As a product of genuine philosophical reflection, the exhibition ultimately poses a crucial question: How do we manage our “little monkey&#8221? and to what extent can we separate ourselves from it? Fikos suggests that the sincere answer can be found in the lyrics of Robbie Williams’ song: “Couldn’t help but notice this Mexican just staring at me. Or was it my monkey? I couldn't be sure. This uncertainty and confusion capture the constant struggle of humans with their primitive instincts, offering a profound and contemplative view of human psychology.

    About the artist

Fikos, born in Athens, Greece in 1987, embarked on his artistic journey at the turn of the millennium. Simultaneously delving into graffiti artistry and studying Byzantine painting under the esteemed guidance of George Kordis, a luminary in the revival of iconography, Fikos honed his craft through their collaboration, extending their artistic reach to create murals in Orthodox churches worldwide.

Transitioning seamlessly from street art to monumental murals, Fikos’s prowess culminated in his renowned masterpiece “Earth and Sky” in Kyiv, Ukraine—a towering 46-meter testament to Byzantine art’s modern resurgence, setting records as the world’s largest Byzantine mural and the tallest Greek artwork since antiquity.

Drawing inspiration from various artistic traditions such as ancient Egyptian art and modernism, Fikos's oeuvre is a captivating fusion of diverse influences, predominantly expressed through canvases and large-scale murals spanning the globe.

With an extensive portfolio, Fikos has made an indelible mark, participating in exhibitions and festivals worldwide, garnering acclaim for his unique “Contemporary Byzantine Painting” style, which continues to captivate and inspire audiences globally.
