9 August 2023 – Larnaca, Cyprus. Cyprus Airways carried out this morning the first commercial flight with the new flagship of its fleet, the Airbus A220. The flight, (CY310), was bound for Athens, the most popular destination on the national flag carrier's network.
The welcome of the flight passengers started with a cake cutting and photo session at the departure gate and continued on the aircraft with a small gift. Present were the CEO of the airline, Paul Sies and the Commercial Director, Christos Limnatitis, who welcomed and escorted the passengers of this flight.
During a short speech before departure, Mr. Sies welcomed passengers and stated that the A220 will set a new standard for the airline's customer experience. Continuing, he said that the aircraft offers Cyprus Airways the opportunity to achieve the best possible balance between passenger comfort, operational efficiency and sustainable development. “The A220 will play a key role in realizing our vision for a greener, more sustainable travel experience as well as superior comfort for our customers. Every time you choose to fly on Cyprus Airways' A220 you are contributing to a more environmentally friendly travel experience” stressed Mr. Sies.
In a recent press conference, the company committed together with Airbus and the Cyprus Government to the use of at least 10% sustainable fuel, which will bring Cyprus Airways and with it the Cyprus Aviation Market, far ahead of any other European Country in path to zero carbon footprint.
The Commercial Director, Christos Limnatitis, added that the A220-300 aircraft will offer its customers exceptional comfort with its large and quiet cabin, available luggage spaces and the most comfortable seats compared to any other single-aisle aircraft. The aircraft also has large windows offering panoramic views, mobile charging facilities and other amenities.
“The launch of the A220 is a significant milestone for us and its introduction demonstrates our commitment to an exceptional and sustainable air travel customer experience,” added Mr Limnatitis. Continuing, he said the aircraft offers significant environmental benefits, including excellent fuel efficiency, a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions per seat, a 50% reduction in NOx emissions compared to industry standards and a 50% smaller noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft.
Today's first flight marks the start of operational operation of the two new aircraft which by the beginning of September will be fully integrated into our operations.”
This winter Cyprus Airways is expected to launch the A220 to most of its destinations.
