Five-year-old from Paphos to Manhattan - Brought to him by his mother without his father's consent

A 4.5-year-old boy is on his way to the United States without his mother, following a Paphos Family Court ruling that acquitted an American father who accused his wife of abducting their son.

The Cypriot mother claimed that she was a victim of verbal, psychological and physical violence and appealed to the competent US authorities for protection. At the same time he contacted the consulate of Cyprus in New York, achieving the return of Cypriot citizenship and a Cypriot passport to the child. Without his father's information and consent, he returned to Cyprus and has lived in Paphos ever since. The father of the child rejected all the allegations of the mother and convinced the court. He said that when he realized that his wife had left the house, he could not imagine that he had left the United States, as the child did not have a passport and was an American citizen. The mother also resided illegally in the United States and made arrangements to legalize her stay so she could travel. When he could not trace the child, he hired two detectives. The court convinced that he meets the requirements for the safe upbringing of the child, as he is a gymnast with a permanent job, while the apartment in which he lives is satisfactory. The court ruled that the child's usual residence is in the United States, despite the fact that he lived longer in Cyprus, after being abducted by his mother. The mother is required to deliver the child by February 10 and pay both the travel and court costs.

The Ministry of Justice was represented by lawyer I. Tsintidou and the mother by P. Vorkas. The decision was issued by Judge R. Prokopiou.
