Repeated arrests across the country are not deterring fraud rings who call elderly people pretending to be police officers or doctors and convince them to pay large sums, under the pretext that their relative has been involved in a traffic accident.

This time, the fraudsters operated in an area of Xanthi, where they caused panic in an elderly woman whom they called in the morning Thursday, telling her that her child had been seriously injured in a car accident and that she needed a large sum of money for immediate surgery and subsequent hospitalization.

The distraught woman did not suspect that the unknown interlocutor was a fraud to her and agreed to pay more than 35,000 euros, which he handed over to accomplices of the “monkey” doctor. When she realized that she had been deceived, she filed a complaint with the Xanthi Police, who are investigating to identify the unknown perpetrators.
