The Department of Architecture and Engineering of the Polytechnic School of Frederick University and the Cyprus Association of Architects are co-organizing a lecture on “The natural phenomenon of the earthquake: The role of citizens and scholars in reducing of seismic risk” with as speakerPanagioti Touliato, Professor at the University's Department of Architectural Engineering.

The lecture will be given on May 12 at the Frederick University in Nicosia and in its context the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadis will address >. The event will also be welcomed by the President of the Association of Architects of Cyprus, Alkis Dikaios and the Vice President of the Department of Architectural Engineering of the University Frederick, Associate Professor Marios Pelekanos.

In his lecture, Professor Touliatos will focus on the natural phenomenon of the earthquake with an emphasis on the measures that can be taken to reduce the seismic risk. As he states: “Unlike other types of natural disasters such as volcanic eruption, gravity wave (tsunami), floods, fires, typhoon and others, earthquake does not directly threaten the life of living beings. But it threatens it indirectly, through its effect on human structures, such as buildings, bridges, dams and nuclear power plants. Man is obviously unable to control the timing, intensity and extent of the seismic phenomenon, but on the other hand, he is perfectly capable of reducing the seismic risk through the appropriate constructions on the one hand and the appropriate organization of his societies on the other. Seismic risk reduction is based on the recognition of specific responsibilities and the implementation of specific applicable practices before, during and after any seismic activity.”

The lecture is addressed to civil protection officials, scholars, architects and civil engineers and to every active and properly prepared citizen. Those interested can register their participation (until May 10) at the link: https://forms.gle/9GnJgTxhikedmyxd8

The lecture is the opening event of a series of workshops entitled “Architectural Seismic Design” which will begin on May 22 at Frederick University and will be given by members of the academic staff of the Department of Architectural Engineering.
