French Ambassador: Avoid unilateral decisions in relation to Varos

Creative ideas and some flexibility will probably be useful in the Cyprus talks, as in any successful negotiation process, but our compass must remain the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, said French Ambassador to Cyprus, Catalina Sal Catina. stressing at the same time that unilateral decisions should be avoided in relation to Varos.

Speaking on Wednesday night at the reception given at the embassy in Nicosia for the French National Day, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis and other officials, Ms. Granet Catalano stated that France as an EU country and a permanent member The UN Security Council looks forward to the resumption of negotiations within the framework of the United Nations.

He said that today there is a risk of a dangerous impasse given the positions that were presented in Geneva. “The sense of urgency, the determination, maybe some courage, is needed more than ever. “No unproductive and unrealistic conditions in the talks,” he stressed.

He also noted that the solution can not be found through division and that division means that all sides will lose.

He stated that the reopening of the crossing points almost 450 days after their closure was a very positive development. He added, however, that more needs to be done to build trust.

“Building trust precludes any action that is against UN resolutions. “It is for this that unilateral decisions in relation to Varosia must be avoided and the issue addressed through dialogue,” he said.

Ms. Grenet Catalano also referred to the excellent relations between Cyprus and France and the very close cooperation between the two countries.

He pointed out, among other things, that in the field of defense there are strong general ties that have deepened and noted the many visits of French naval ships to Cyprus, such as the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

He said the French military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean shows France's continued commitment to stability and security in the region.

He stressed that France will remain vigilant and always ready to defend international law through dialogue and mutual respect.

He also said that energy is another area that could speed up co-operation in the region, noting that France would do its part as a new member of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum.

He also wished Cyprus and France to be able to expand their cooperation in new areas such as innovation and research, especially in the digital sector, renewable energy sources and tourism.
