Frequent power outages have been observed in recent days, causing severe discomfort to the citizens, with the EAC constantly running to repair the damage and restore electricity to the places where problems arise. Yesterday, Monday (19/08), a four-hour power outage was observed from 18:30 in the afternoon until 22:30 in the evening in the areas of Engomi, Strovolos and Lakatamia, due to damage that occurred in the area of Parisinos. According to the EAC, the specific incident lasted for four hours, as it was a failure of the same cable in two places, forcing the Authority to bring two generators from Limassol and Larnaca to meet the needs of the citizens.

The press representative of the EAC, Mrs. Christina Papadopoulou, was asked to report to “K” what is the reason for the frequent power outages, noting that in the electricity grid, the prolonged heat, the intense humidity, but also the increased demand of the season strain the system, causing frequent breakdowns . Also, several problems arise from accident incidents, i.e. contractors carrying out work damage the underground cables and if the Authority is not immediately informed for repair, then a major interruption in supply is observed. Ms. Papadopoulou emphasized the importance of immediate notification in case of accidents, so that the crews arrive on time at the scene and isolate the incident by providing alternatives until it is corrected.

Also, some other problems that arise in the electrical network and cause frequent breakdowns are traffic accidents, such as hitting poles, but also the drivers of tall vehicles who inadvertently drag EAC overhead cables causing problems in the network. Another reason for frequent power outages is rampant theft of transformers and removal of equipment. Regarding planned power outages related to upgrading, maintenance and new facilities, citizens can be informed from the EAC Mobile App and the Authority's website.

Until it is expected to arrive the demand in the next few days

“It seems that there is enough for the next few days”, the press representative of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSMO), Mr. Hara Koussiappa, told “K”. “In the coming days, the maximum total demand is expected to range from 1000 to 1050 MW during midday hours, while during the evening peak it is expected to range from 870 to 900 MW. Apart from the case of major impairment or combined impairments, there appears to be sufficiency,” Ms Kushiappa said. It is recalled that an all-time demand record, namely 1,290 MW, was recorded on July 22.
