What the organization says in its announcement
The ecological intervention Friends of Akamas requests the re-evaluation of the project for the installation of hubs-pavilions in the Akamas National Forest Park, with its announcement following a publication in the daily press, according to which the tender for the said project is expected to be re-announced by the Department of Forestry.
The organization notes in its announcement that the tender was cancelled, as it had a budgeted expenditure of 6.5 million euros, but the only offer submitted was 9 million euros.
“This development gives the last opportunity to review and re-evaluate the project”, notes the ecological organization, adding “that any immediate re-announcement will have a dramatically increased budget because, without it, the repetition of the process will lead to the same result”.
The position of the organization from the beginning, as it states later, was “that the hubs and any accompanying infrastructures are unnecessary that have nothing to do with the management of the National Forest Park itself nor the immediate needs of its visitors”.
He also adds that these infrastructures will be unequally competitive with those of the villages with negative effects on their economy. “Such infrastructures are not only not justified, but will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the environment of the region,” the announcement notes, suggesting that the project's millions be given to the strengthening and development of Akama's own communities.
“We call on the Department of Forestry and the new Minister of the Environment to take advantage of this opportunity to review the issue and avoid such a significant waste of public funds for an unnecessary project with significant negative effects on the environment of the region”, the announcement concludes.
