From Fidias to… 56 plus Phidias in the Cypriot political scene

The double election contest of July 9 did not only bring surprises and rearrangements in the party map of our country. He also confirmed the political bankruptcy, which has plagued the political system for a long time, which, unfortunately, does not lead to self-criticism, to a reconstruction from the foundations and restoration, if possible, of the relations between politics and political personnel with the electorate, with society.

The sweeping advance of Pheidias brings neither more wisdom, nor prudence, nor dialogue, nor respect…As a lailapa it seduces everyone and everything. And in a much shorter period of time, than we initially estimated, it finds imitators. Copycats of the young TikToker's behaviors, his tactics, his approaches, his publicity. Not only in the party field, which is also the most vulnerable to populism, but also in the political and technocratic field. Everyone rushes to place themselves next to Phidias in order to gain any publicity, to provide credentials to gain his favor, to feature them in his posts… they give “explanations” or “answers” that they avoid giving to institutions, to organized functions of the Cyprus State. This is Cyprus.

Finally where will we be led? In unrestrained populism and imitation of a young man's action, which under other circumstances, his imitators would have thrown him into the ditch. But Phidias is a powerful player in social media and almost everyone is quick to derive something from his glory and his visibility. The young MEP was received by the Minister of Education just a few days after his election to discuss … his proposal for more attractive schools and also the issue of air conditioners. We heard complaints from MPs who are members of the parliamentary Education committee that the Minister did not find time to attend the committee session on air conditioners and sent the general director of the Ministry, but she had time to arrange a meeting with Phidias.

Two MEPs, re-elected, hastened to declare that they spoke with Phidias and will help him familiarize himself with his duties in the European Parliament. And his mentor – this is how he introduces himself – Christoforos Tornaritis warned that he would ” fill the Parliament with … 56 Phidias”.

In fact, this is how the day after the elections took shape after the resounding message sent by the citizens to the state and political leadership.Party leaders engage in long-winded “introspections” to get the issue out of the news, out of the news, and onto other things. The individual voices that were heard in various party spaces for the assumption of responsibilities, the resignations of the leading groups and the rebirth of political formations were treated disparagingly, without any inclination for dialogue, for changes, for approaching the public opinion, of the citizens whom they literally lost in the course of several years.

In Athens, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, although dominant in the political game, with percentages almost twice that of the second party although reduced compared to the national elections, immediately reacted to the electoral percentages, and reshuffled a group of ministers wanting to send a message of dynamic restart. A message that responds to the citizens' request “we trust you. But get better, go faster,” as we were informed by the related reports. Mitsotakis played pre-election as a leading figure in the European arena and in the political group in which New Democracy, the European People's Party, which managed to remain the leading political force in the new European Parliament, participates. And he redeemed this in the processes that are being carried out for the promotion of the new institutions in the European Union, assuming together with Donald Tusk of Poland the role of negotiator on behalf of the EPP, with the other political groups, for the selection of those who will be nominated to the European offices. Athens, which in the current structure of the European pyramid, holds the position of vice-president of the European Commission with Margaritis Schinas, claims according to journalistic information, the portfolio of Agricultural Policy, or the portfolio of Competitiveness, or the portfolio of Enlargement.

What happened in Nicosia? Muga. No taking responsibility, no dialogue .The only announcements made were the intention of Loukas Fourlas to claim one of the vice-presidencies in the European People's Party and of Kostas Mavridis to claim a vice-presidency in the political group of the Socialists and Democrats. President Christodoulidis participated in the meeting of the European People's Party and the informal meeting of the European Council. He did not open his papers with regards to his claims. He remains committed to the decision of the EPP conference in Bucharest in support of Ursula von der Leyen's candidacy for re-election to the presidency of the European Commission.

Pre-election as well as post-election, he avoided any positive allusion in favor of the political group he chose to join, apparently to avoid … lashings from DIKO, DIPA and EDEK that support his government and to not give impetus (!!!) in the DISY which declares opposition. At the meeting of the leaders of the EPP in Brussels, the president of the Alarm, Annita Dimitriou, also participated. We hear that there was no agreement between the two for cooperation… for a common position regarding the Cypriot claims. The President, it should be noted, was saved by choosing to attend the EPP leaders' meetings, after Emmanuel Macron's Renew political group was reduced to fourth place, behind the Socialists and Democrats and the far-right ECR, of Georgia Melon.

However we do it, everything has its meaning. Especially after so much discredit that political personnel, institutions and parties carry behind them. What the world is asking for is nothing more than purity of positions and actions. Why should it be so difficult for those who serve politics from any position to operate on the basis of the demands they have from others? But how to change, since we have a goldfish memory? The people – those who went to the polls – carnivalized everyone as aptly pointed out by university student H. Tsoukas, because apparently they don't believe that anything can change. And how do the political staff react? He repeats his evil self and “plays delay” to forget “the disgraceful massacre at the ballot box”… It's a pity that no leadership, of the new generation, dares to work outside the box, pleasantly surprising those who still believe in politics, creating an opportunity for the future…

Business as usual

Business as usual in the parties… The president of the Democratic party, Nikolas Papadopoulos, saw the back of Phidias Panagiotou and ELAM in the European elections. For the first time in its annals, DIKO recorded a single-digit percentage… the first reading that took place at the party Secretariat did not hold any surprises. Not a single voice for resignations and an electoral conference although there was talk of re-establishment, reconstitution and party modernization. However, voices were heard about the cost of participating in the government scheme. However, the democratic president hastened to prescribe decisions even though the party processes for the evaluation of the election result are ongoing.

He spoke to “Kathimerini” about the electoral consequences that DIKO and two other partners had, due to the disappointment that part of society feels for the Christodoulidis government, but he emphasized that there is no question of DIKO leaving the government shape. Not a word about the pre-election campaign that took place, about the costs paid by Chrysis Pantelidis's closest collaborator, nor did he deal with the fact that the collaborators prevailed over the party members in the public ballot.
