From the united Cyprus, the “realist” Tatar found himself in the union with Greece – Repeated request to accept sovereignty to go to negotiations
The Turkish Cypriot “people” demand the right of sovereign equality and equal international status said Ersin Tatarhis interview on a Güneç tv web show, arguing that the negotiations for a federation have been exhausted and therefore there is no point in starting new negotiations for such a solution.
According to the GTP, the Turkish press writes today that Mr. Tatar added that “in diplomacy we have fundamental principles that could not be negotiated. When they sit at the table as the Republic of Cyprus, we are represented as a minority. But when the table is turned again we continue our way in the same way as a minority. In order for this situation to change, it is a condition that our sovereignty be accepted”.
Sovereignty, he added, is the right of the “people” for self-government and the most natural right of the Turkish Cypriot “people”, as he said, is the struggle to keep their “state” alive. Turkey, he continued, fully supports this policy, saying that it would be difficult to proceed without Turkey's support and for that he expressed thanks to the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
Commenting on the statements of the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides in relation to the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, Mr. Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriot “people” are obliged to protect their rights in all areas and opposed the reference of the President of the Republic for a united Cyprus. “Their dream of a united Cyprus is built on the withdrawal of the Turkish army from the island and the termination of Turkey's guarantees”. But, he argued, “we are realistic and we know very well where these kinds of demands will go. This can go as far as the union of Cyprus with Greece. Experiences in the past have taught us very well what this means.”
They did not get to today easily, he continued saying that they were paid honors, sacrifices were made. “For this reason, we are obliged to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people to the end,” he said.
