Gender Equality Commissioner: The Cypriot woman works more to have the same salary as the man

The gender pay gap in Cyprus is 10.4%, which means that a woman must work more days a year than a man for work of equal value, in order to earn the same salary as a man, says Equality Commissioner of Gender Iosifina Antoniou.

He also notes that in order to bridge the pay gap between men and women, close and effective cooperation of all stakeholders is needed, as well as further measures and policies so that women have equal opportunities in their professional lives.

In a statement on the occasion of the European Equal Remuneration Day on November 10, the Commissioner for Gender Equality stated that according to the latest official data published by Eurostat, the gender pay gap in Cyprus today amounts to 10.4%. This states, the Commissioner states, that a woman in Cyprus must work more days a year than a man for work of equal value, in order to earn the same salary as the man. It is noted that in the EU the pay gap is 14%.

Ms. Antoniou emphasizes that today, despite the fact that the percentage of women in the labor market has increased, several obstacles continue to keep the advancement of women at low levels. While the labor market is staffed with remarkable, qualified and capable women, we regret to find out, she notes, that their value is not valued when it comes to their rise to higher and higher positions in the hierarchy, with men continuing to occupy the most hierarchically higher positions.

He states that in the new National Action Plan for Equality between men and women 2019-2023, one of the 7 main goals is the Professional Empowerment of Women and the Work-Family Reconciliation.

At the same time, he continues, the following intermediate goals have been set: Combating harassment and sexual harassment in the workplace, strengthening the capacity of the Social Partners to better address the problems faced by women in employment, strengthening women entrepreneurship, combating workplace, reconciling work and family obligations, encouraging businesses to promote equal pay and gender equality in the workplace in general and eliminating inequality between men and women.

In 2021, the European Commission set the European Equal Pay Day at 10 November. This day symbolizes the long road to achieving full equality for women and men in the EU.

The European Commission is marking this day to draw attention to the gender pay gap and its root causes, including those linked to pay discrimination and pay transparency.

November 10 is, the Commissioner notes, the day when women symbolically stop being paid compared to their male colleagues for work of equal value. That is, women in Europe work for free in the last two months of the year, since for every 1 euro that men are paid, women are paid 86 cents.

Ms. Antoniou says that while equal pay for men and women has been enshrined in the EU for more than 60 years, it is not fully implemented.

“Despite improvements in women's positions in social and professional life, the pay gap between men and women remains large and deeply entrenched,” she concludes.
