Normally, the voting process started on Sunday morning in the 942 polling centers that have been set up all over Cyprus for the Archdiocesan elections, said the General Administrator, Yiannis Harilaou, making a’ once again a call to the people to come and vote for their chosen one.

In statements to the Archdiocese shortly after the start of the voting and accompanied by the Director General of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Kostas Konstantinou and the legal advisor, Simos Angelidis , Mr. Charilaou said the process is "flowing smoothly" and it is his request that this gentle process continue until the end of the voting.

The process is equivalent and similar to Presidential elections, but in a more complicated way due to the peculiarities of church elections, he noted. It is a democratic process with inviolability guaranteed, he continued, and it provides a facility for those who want to exercise their right to vote, to do so. He appealed once again to those interested in voting to go to the website of the Church of Cyprus and through the link there, find out which is their polling station. They can also call 22 554600, he added.

Mr Charilaou said he would make statements again in the break between 1pm and 2pm and shortly after 6pm and the closing of polls. Updates will be about the attendance rate and after closing θ’ vote counting begins.

The result will be known tonight, he said, saying that the counting will be done locally at the polling stations, the counting sheet will be sent to the Archdiocese to be integrated into the software that will produce the all-Cypriot results. "It is a difficult and painstaking effort, therefore I cannot promise the time" he said.

Turnout does not essentially determine whether a result is valid or invalid, he said, noting that there are nearly 549,000 voters and those of them who wish to exercise their right to vote will count for the final result. His appeal, he said, is for the people to exercise this electoral right.

Yiannis Charilaou described the cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior as excellent.

The Director General of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that church elections have their peculiarities, but the Ministry has been holding elections for years, it is part of its responsibilities. "Certainly with this electoral process we are raising the stakes for the Presidential elections.  But we have been working on the Presidentials for 6 months now, quietly. On January 5th we will have the submission of nominations. I think everything is running very smoothly for the holding of the Presidential elections on February 5th and on the 12th if a second round is needed.

Simos Angelidis, legal advisor of the Archdiocese, stated that he also contributed to the small extent attributed to him. to confirm that these elections will be impartial, objective and fair. Everyone, believers and the church, have kept a low profile, as one would expect, he concluded.
