We are working so that Christodoulidis-Tatar can sit at the dialogue table, says the Greek Foreign Minister – “The Cyprus issue remains the highest priority for Greek foreign policy,” he stressed

The priority that Greece attaches to the solution of the Cyprus issue and the importance of the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulidis and leader of the Turkish Cypriots Ersin Tatars, underlined the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis, in an interview with the newspaper “REAL NEWS”.

< p>«The Cyprus issue remains the highest priorityfor Greek foreign policy. We are working so that the Cypriot President and the leader of the Turkish Cypriots sit at the dialogue table“, noted Mr. Gerapetritis.

When asked about his recent meeting with his Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, assured that there is an excellent level of cooperation both with Mrs. Holguín and with the Secretary General himself.

“We communicate and meet regularly to be able to activate the dialogue mechanism between the two sides”, he pointed out.

At the same time, he reiterated that during the meeting between the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Cyprus issue was also discussed in Ankara.

“The Greek position is clear. The two sides should discuss on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions on the bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. The dialogue should start and there should be a productive discussion, which will lead us to a sustainable and beneficial solution for the Cyprus issue in the context of the resolutions”, said Mr. Gerapetritis.

At the same time, he noted that The Greek and Cypriot Governments are in agreement that “the improvement in Greek-Turkish relations can only have positive results for the initiation of the dialogue on the Cyprus issue”.

More broadly, regarding the context of the Greek-Turkish dialogue, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. Erdoganthey will meet again in September in the framework of the UN General Assembly, and if deemed appropriate they will also meet at the NATO Summit in Washington. In addition, the Supreme Cooperation Council was agreed to be held at the end of the year in Ankara, while in between there will be a new round of political dialogue on a positive agenda and Confidence Building Measures.

Asked, on the issue of the demarcation of continental shelf and the EEZ, Mr. Gerapetritis noted that this is a complex issue, which the Greek side will raise “when the conditions are right”.

“The climate of honesty and mutual understanding should be fully established, especially through the consolidation and full implementation of the positive agenda agreements. From the beginning we said that we would proceed step by step in the Greek-Turkish dialogue”, he underlined.

Overall, Mr. Gerapetritis assessed the visit of the Greek side to Ankara as positive, speaking of a sincere atmosphere and deliberative mood and from both parties.

“I don't consider it negative that we recorded our disagreements. And this is because it is necessary for any dialogue process to be able to discuss those on which we disagree, without generating tension and crisis”, concluded the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs.
