A pile of fresh soil and a 1.2 meter deep hole were found at the grave of the late CDU politician and former German finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, as announced by the Offenburg police.

According to local police authorities and the prosecutor's office, unknown persons dug the hole overnight on Monday near Schäuble's grave but surprisingly failed to reach his coffin.

The police were informed of the fact by local municipality officials , who discovered the excavation at the Waldbach cemetery on Monday morning.

“As it emerged based on the results of forensic work at the site, an unknown person must have dug a funnel-shaped hole about 1.2 meters deep. However, according to the available information, the person did not reach the coffin of the deceased,” the relevant announcement states.

Motives unknown

The department Offenburg headquarters police department's forensics department has launched an investigation, while the details surrounding the reasons that led to this heinous act remain unknown.

Authorities are currently working together to identify any witnesses who may have they have seen something suspicious during the night.

It is recalled that Schäuble died at the end of last December at the age of 81 after a battle with cancer and was buried in his hometown, Offenburg, in early January.
