Germany: Nord Stream 2 certification does not pose a threat to EU gas supply

The approval of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to supply Russian gas to Germany will not threaten the supply of the largest economy in Europe and the European Union, the German Ministry of Economy announced today.

Although the pipeline is ready to start operating, to do so, it still needs to be certified by the German Federal Network Service and the relevant ministry analysis on the issue of supply is a key condition for the regulator to continue this process.

“In its analysis, the Federal Ministry of Economy concludes that the issuance of the certification does not threaten the security of the supply of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union with natural gas,” the ministry said in a statement.

The statement also said it had submitted its analysis to the regulator following talks with neighboring EU countries, adding that Italy, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had the possibility of consulting on the matter.

The German regulator has until early January to certify the pipeline, but may make its decision earlier. Once it has made its recommendation, it is forwarded to the European Commission, which has another two months to decide.
