A written statement was issued by the Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos for the appointment of Deputy Minister of Culture

The President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis, exercising the powers provided to him by the Constitution, decided to appoint Mr. Giannis Toumazis, as the first Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus, who will take office on July 1st.

Mr. Toumazis is a personality, identified with the culture of our place and its development. He is distinguished for his professional competence, ethics, and especially his deep knowledge of the subject he is called to manage.

With the creation of the State Ministry of Culture and today the appointment of Mr. Toumazis, a goal of decades for our country, culture and people is being realized.

The following is a biographical note of Mr. Toumazis:

Giannis Toumazis was born in Famagusta.

He studied Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, Scenography at the School of Fine Arts Utrecht, in the Netherlands, and Aesthetics and Theory of Art at the University of Amiens, France, where he completed his doctoral dissertation.

Since 1994 he has been the Director of the Municipal Arts Center

of Nicosia and the Pieridis Foundation.

He has been the Chairman of the Board of THOK and Vice-Chairman Bicommunal Technical Committee for Culture.

In 2011, the French Republic awarded him the title of Knight of Arts and Letters for his contribution to Culture.

In 2020 he was unanimously elected Correspondent Member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.
