The excitement of discovery was the element that prevailed last Saturday at Frederick University where girls aged 9-12 had the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops as part of the Day STEM.

The girls experimented with colors and solutions in the University's Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Labs, got in touch with Robotics and Programming, learned about the importance of Engineering in Architecture and participated in an experiential empowerment workshop! The workshops were designed by members of the academic community of the Polytechnic School, the School of Health Sciences and the School of Education and Social Sciences and were delivered in collaboration with members of the University's research and student community, delighting the girls who participated.

STEM Day is dedicated to the exciting world of Natural Sciences, Technology and Engineering and has been established at Frederick University as one of the activities of the long-term campaign “To all women & girls: Join the journey in Engineering, Science and Technology” of the University.

Alongside the activities for children, parents had the opportunity to attend a workshop where they learned how to encourage and boost their children's self-esteem. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Marios Theodorou, Lecturer in the Department of Psychology and Social Sciences at Frederick University. It was preceded by a presentation on the presence of women in the fields of Science, Technology and Engineering in which the President of the University Council, Mrs. Natassa Frederikou, explained why increasing their representation in these areas is important. «Ta positive comments we receive from the girls participating in these workshops motivate us to continue our campaign and see more and more girls in the fields considered 'male dominated'. It is important for every person to do what they love. It is very sad that we limit our girls' choices and put limits on what they can be. With our workshops, we hope to help them get in touch with various areas of Science, Engineering and Technology and to get to know other women who are active in these fields”, comments Ms. Frederikou.< /p>

The next actions of the campaign will take place in the near future:

  • On May 13 and 14, the University will participate in the 2nd Femme Fest Cyprus, the only Festival for the Promotion of Gender Equality in Cyprus, with two actions: with the Thematic Center “Women and Sciences” where the public will be able to be informed about the campaign through tour and with workshops for children offered by the Frederick University Robotics Academy. The workshops will take place on both days from 18:00 to 20:00 while the thematic center will be accessible throughout the duration of the festival, from 17:00 until late at night, in the Municipal Garden of Nicosia.
  • On July 3-7, the University will hold the STEM Camp for girls aged 13-16. The STEM Camp consists of workshops designed by the University's academic staff specifically for these ages and held on the grounds of Frederick University in Nicosia. To apply, follow the link here.

As part of the campaign “To all women & girls: Join the journey in Engineering, Science and Technology”, 50% scholarships are offered to all girls who choose to study in the undergraduate programs of the Polytechnic School. Through its campaign and multidimensional action, Frederick University contributes to the goal of gender equality and the elimination of gender stereotypes as a member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

The campaign is under the auspices of the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Jozis Christodoulou. More information: https://www.frederick.ac.cy/women-in-STEM/el/.
