Government responds to the late Republic of Cyprus - JV calls on AKEL to respond

In a written statement, the Government Spokesman, Mr. Kyriakos Kousios, responded to the criticism of the president of DIKO, who in today's statement stated that the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the five-party conference will mean that it is incomplete.

“In response,” says the Government Spokesman, to today's statement by the President of DIKO, Mr. Nikola Papadopoulos, I would like to note the following:

  1. The Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the UN, a full member of the EU and, therefore, in no way becomes obsolete, as is the regular tactic and position of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots.
  1. It should be reminded that the same did not happen during the negotiations in Burgenstock, when the then President of the Republic of Cyprus, the late Tassos Papadopoulos, participated in the arbitration process by the then UN Secretary General.

Of course, the Republic of Cyprus did not run the risk of abolition when the current President of the Republic of Cyprus participated as the leader of the Greek Cypriot community in the occasional negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

  1. The statements of the President of DIKO that the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the five-party conference will mean that the Republic of Cyprus is extinct, is a completely misleading approach to the attempt of the UN Secretary General to continue the process of resolving the Cyprus issue.
  1. What surprises us is the late position of DIKO that it is immediately the defense force of the bi-communal bi-zonal federation.
  1. And the big question is whether, and to this end AKEL is called to answer, our participation in the five-party conference will mean either the abolition of the Republic of Cyprus or that the Republic of Cyprus will become extinct.
  1. The question we are called to face today is whether we have the right to refuse the invitation of the UN Secretary General, since we will attend the five-party conference, always respecting the basic principles of the Cyprus settlement, as expressed through the resolutions and decisions of the Council. Security of the UN, and not through populist approaches to propose our non-participation in a conference convened by the UN Secretary General.
  1. We want to assure you that regardless of any pressure, whether at home or abroad, our goal and purpose is to participate in the five-party conference convened by the UN Secretary-General in order to continue the negotiations to achieve a functioning and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem. which will not ignore the sensitivities of the Turkish Cypriots, but neither, of course, will it ignore the just sensitivities of the Greek Cypriots.

We want, further, to assure that, as is our firm position, the solution of the Cyprus problem should be within the framework of the agreed solution basis “.
