Greece / Covid19: The nine islands that flirt with red

Several tourist areas of Greece have come under the microscope of experts due to the epidemiological picture they present in recent days.

The increase in cases across the country that has been observed in recent days, combined with the increasing number of hospital admissions due to the Delta mutation, have alarmed government and scientists.

The measures taken in Mykonos after the mini lockdown seem to have paid off and so they are heading towards their end, since the epidemiological picture on the island is better than last week.

However, it seems that there are some other areas that create a “headache” in the Committee of the Ministry of Health.

According to the MEGA report, an increase in cases has been observed recently on islands that are considered particularly popular with tourists and in particular:

  • Zakynthos,
  • Leros,
  • Corfu,
  • Kos,
  • Sifnos,
  • Serifos,
  • Milos,
  • Antiparos and
  • Rhodes

Proposal for a “tourist bubble” on vacation

Elsewhere, scientists are proposing a solution to the “social bubble” on vacation. They explain that even on the beach or on our walks on the islands we should have a specific company that will always be the same and will not include a large number of people.

Indicative are what the professor of Environmental Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Demosthenes Sarigiannis, told MEGA, who spoke about “small groups of tourists, who are together in the hotel and in the restaurant and in the bar”.

As he explained, this will happen in order to “reduce the dispersion among tourists”.

The unvaccinated threaten the wall of immunity

At a time when the majority of Greeks are packing suitcases for the summer holidays, the percentage of unvaccinated citizens continues to worry and create cracks in the wall of immunity.

Experts ring the alarm bells daily, urging everyone to get vaccinated before going on holiday, as the Delta mutation spreads like wildfire.

Detailed data on the rates of infection and hospitalization of unvaccinated cases were given by the professor of Pharmacology at the Medical School of the University of Crete, Achilleas Gravanis.

As he said, by the end of the year, about 4 out of 10 unvaccinated people will have been infected, ie 35-40% and of these 10% -15% will go to the hospital and a 5% will unfortunately not make it.

But apart from the fact that the unvaccinated are completely unprotected and “naked” in the fight against the virus, they prevent the building of a strong wall of immunity.

According to research data by Pulse in collaboration with EODY, 3,138,000 adult citizens have not yet made an appointment, at a time when a battle is being fought to build a wall of immunity.

In fact, at a time when the immunity wall was expected to be built in the fall, Professor Gigas Majorkinis stressed that everything shows that this will be completed by the end of the year.

Also, the evidence that the unvaccinated are the ones who end up in hospitals is unshakable.

“Currently, 95% of the hospitalizations and 100% of the intubated people are unvaccinated,” Nikos Tzanakis, Professor of Pulmonology at the University of Crete, told ERT about the situation in the country's hospitals.
