Energy expert Charles Ellinas said that he considers it very possible to build a pipeline that will transport natural gas from Israel for liquefaction to Cyprus, in case the additional quantities of natural gas that Energean expects are discovered.
The Senior Associate at the World Energy Center of the Atlantic Council was invited by KYPE to comment on yesterday's announcement of the Greek energy company Energean for the discovery of a commercially exploitable natural gas field with the “Athena” exploration drilling. Mr. Ellinas stated that the 8 billion cubic meters they discovered is a very small amount, since the company expected more than 20. In comparison, he mentioned that the Cypriot deposit “Aphrodite” has 116 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This, he said, does not help Energean move forward directly with projects, but it must also make new discoveries. However, he noted that the company said that in the “Olympus Area” where the “Athena” deposit was discovered, based on their calculations that have now been confirmed more, there may be more than 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
“What Energean says is that it will continue drilling and that they believe they will be able to proceed with new projects, including the possibility of exporting to Cyprus,” he said, adding, however, that new discoveries are needed to do so. >
At the tripartite meeting of the Ministers of Energy of Greece, Cyprus, Israel, which took place last April, Energean had proposed to bring to Cyprus from 2026 a mobile liquefaction unit, the Hilli Episeyo FLNG, owned by the Norwegian company Golar LNG, and currently is located in Cameroon. In 2026 the unit will be free and Energean proposes to come to the area of Vasilikos, where it will liquefy and export quantities of natural gas that will come to Cyprus via a pipeline from Israel.
“The reason I think it is a very probable project, is that apart from the fact that it has its partner Golar, in the team is also Vitol which is the owner of VTTI tanks in Vasiliko”, said Mr. Ellinas. He added that Vitol is the largest oil and gas trading company in the world and is interested in buying all the LNG that could be produced by Hilli Episeyo FLNG.
Cyprus, he said, will be able to get gas if it wants it directly from the pipeline that will be built, which will cost around 6-7 dollars & nbsp; per thousand cubic feet in comparison with 25 dollars that is expected to cost natural gas next year gas to import. He added that Energean said that if Cyprus is interested in getting gas from the pipeline, it could be built in two years and is expected to cost up to $ 1.5 billion and be financed by the companies that will participate in the consortium. p>
Mr. Ellinas expressed the view that if the quantities required by Energean are discovered, the project is certain, since there will be the quantities, the liquefaction plant and the buyers.
Regarding the development of the Cypriot deposit “Aphrodite”, Mr. Ellinas stated that the chances of their development are smaller, since the negotiations with Chervron have not yet been concluded, while the results of the first quarter issued by the company do not refer to investments in Cyprus, but only in Israel. infrastructure, to Egypt where liquefaction is taking place, at a time when gas exports from Egypt to Europe are expected to triple this year.
Regarding the project for the gas terminal in Vassiliko, Mr. Ellinas said Whereas, although the amended contract between the Chinese manufacturer and the Republic of Cyprus is being submitted for approval to the & nbsp; Central Committee on Changes and Requirements (KEAA), it considers that its signature agreement for 25 million may not be the end of the problems.
