The environmental authority has given the green light for the project related to the improvement of existing forest roads in the area of Akama National Forest Park.
The project concerns the Phase A improvement of the road network which includes the improvement of existing roads with a total length of approximately 13.4 km as follows:
-Road 1A: Archers – White River – Lara 6.6 km Existing width 5-9 meters
– Road 2: Roundabout 2.7 km Existing width 3.5-5 meters
-Road 4B: Archers – Abacus – Fertilizer 4.1 km Existing width 3.5 -5 meters
The estimated execution period of the project is 14 months.
These roads are considered important for organizing, guiding and managing visitors to the Akama National Forest Facility and service hubs, other permitted locations or points of interest, and restricting uncontrolled vehicle parking and access to other parts of the Park. They also serve fire protection and management purposes.
The roads that will be improved will not be declared public roads, and the Park Rules will be applied and there will be control of the implementation and compliance of visitors by the Park Guards.
In the Akama National Forest Park there is an extensive road network, as a result the creation of roads used for various purposes e.g. for protection against forest fires, by locals, by users of rented motorcycles/quad bikes and by hunters. All roads are dirt roads and most of them are accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles (4×4).
The works for each section that will be improved are the following:
-Road 1A: Aspros Potamos – Toxeftra – Lara includes the improvement of the road in its entire width, the configuration of parking lots, the drainage of rainwater, the installation of a water supply pipeline junction of the National Forest Park (Aspros, Larao and Iro Laras). Water orifices will be installed for fire protection purposes, and construction of 6 box culverts and 1 tubular culvert. The standard cross section 6.7-7.2 meters wide includes 5.5 meters of road surface, 0.70 meters & nbsp; groove and 1-2 supports in positions 0.5 meters wide. Implementation period 9 months.
-Road 2: Roundabout includes the improvement of the road in its entire width and the drainage of rainwater of the road deck. The standard 4.9 meter wide cross section includes 3.5 meters of road surface, 0.70 meters of support and 0.70 meters of groove. Implementation period 3 months.
-Road 4B: Archers – Avakas – Lipati includes the improvement of the road in its entire width, the drainage of rainwater of the road deck, the creation of lane parking lots, the construction of retaining walls and the construction of three box culverts. The standard cross section 6.4-6.7 meters wide includes 4.8 meters of road surface, 0.30 meters of support, 0.70 meters of groove and 0.6-0.8 meters for the installation of a safety railing.
The improvement of the road network concerns the existing access to the popular points of interest of Akamas, Toxetra, the Gulf of Lara and the Abaka Gorge and & nbsp; the guidance of the visitors to the facilities of convenience and service of visitors that will be created.
The roads Aspros Potamos – Lara and Toxeftra – Avakas – Lipati are defined as roads within the Akama National Forest Park which will be allowed access to Private Vehicles, while in the section of the Round Road Lara will be allowed to use only by Vehicles of the Park. Periodic maintenance of the road will be done by mechanical means, such as the usual activity on rural and forest roads. The road network that will be improved falls within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Pegeia and the Communities of Pano and Kato Arodes and Inia and is located within the urban zones Da1-PF, Da1, T3b, Z4-PF. The project is also located in the Akama National Forest Park which is a State Forest and has been declared a National Forest Park in accordance with the Forest Law and is part of the Natura2000 Network area “Akama Peninsula”
Its estimated cost project is estimated at € 6 million
