Regarding the conversation with the UN Secretary General, Mr. Pelekanos said that President Anastasiadis told him “the need to act as soon as possible so that the issue can proceed with the appointment of the envoy”. The Secretary General, he added, “replied that he is concerned about the situation and is in consultation with all parties involved in order to reach a conclusion”.

Regarding the contact that the President of the Republic had with the American President Joe Biden, the Government Spokesman said that the President “asked the American President for his active assistance in the Cyprus issue”.

“The American President told him that he is aware of his constant interest in resolving the Cyprus issue on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions,” he said, adding that he also referred to his visit to Cyprus in 2014.

Asked whether consultations are being held for a possible Anastasiadis-Biden meeting, Mr. Pelekanos replied that it is not ruled out that a meeting between President Biden and President Anastasiadis will be arranged in the next few months.
