According to reports from local officials, it all started as a spontaneous protest by prisoners who complained of malnutrition and poor sanitation.

In videos shared earlier on social media, prisoners can be seen climbing walls and thick smoke rising above the prisons of Saint-Marc, a city located 88 kilometers north of the capital Port-au-Prince.

It took the security forces several hours to regain control of the prison. Prosecutor Vincent Francois spoke of great destruction: “All the guards' dormitories were burnt. The Registry has been burned. They set fire everywhere, except their cells.” He warned the residents of the wider area to be alert, as an unspecified number of prisoners escaped.
