“The irresponsibility manifested in the Parliament in relation to our financial system, with the leading forces of both the opposition and the coalition, are a direct threat to the stability of our economy,” says Haris Georgiadis in a written statement, stressing, “the Democrat Alarm will continue to stand as a rampart against populism and irresponsibility wherever and however they come from.”

“We have assessed the performance of the Cypriot economy for the first half of 2023 and our main conclusion is that the growth potential remains satisfactory, especially if one takes into account the difficult circumstances prevailing in the European and international economy. The policies of the Democratic Alarm governments over the past decade have created a sound base, allowing the Cypriot economy to cope with external pressures with remarkable sufficiency. We note that the growth rate for this year – even if it is lower than previous years – remains among the highest in the EU. The fiscal balance remains in surplus, the labor market remains close to full employment and inflation is decelerating.

On the other hand, the slowdown in economic activity, the increase in interest rates by the European Central Bank, the increased cost of energy and the uncertainty prevailing internationally obviously do not leave Cyprus unaffected. On the contrary, they require very careful movements because the risk of derailment is great. In this context, we repeat with even greater intensity the warnings we have expressed recently about the tendency to inflate the costs of the state machine. The Democratic Alarm did not agree and still considers the mass hiring in the public sector wrong, while we urge caution in relation to various allowance increases. The costs of these moves will emerge in the medium term and we hold the government accountable for its choices. At the same time, the irresponsibility manifested in the Parliament in relation to our financial system, with leading forces of both the opposition and the coalition, are a direct threat to the stability of our economy.

The Democratic Alarm will continue to stand up against populism and irresponsibility wherever and however they come from. As a responsible political force, we do not turn a blind eye to difficulties and challenges. Our country needs prudent economic management, emphasis on reforms and policies that encourage growth and investment. In this direction, we are still waiting to see the political stance and specific program of the government. For its part, the Democratic Alarm is ready to offer support, to take initiatives and also to exercise strict criticism, in order to keep our economy on a healthy path”.
