Heatwave Cyprus Crops Farmers Prices

Scorching heatwave conditions have inflicted significant damage on a wide range of agricultural products across Cyprus, farmers’ representatives warned, leading to expected price increases for consumers in the coming days.

Andreas Karyos, spokesperson for potato producers, told Philenews the damage was widespread, affecting crops in both open fields and greenhouses. “ This is a nationwide issue of considerable scale, and it will be reflected on supermarket shelves through price rises,” he said.

The impact is already being felt for some products. Onion plantations have reportedly suffered losses of up to 70%, while watermelons and cantaloupes have seen damage in some cases reaching 100% and 50% respectively.

Karyos also highlighted concerns about the flowering of open-field crops and greenhouse produce, including tomatoes, beans, courgettes, and others. “This translates to reduced quantities available for consumers in the coming days, and a delay in the next flowering cycle,” he explained.

Water scarcity further threatens future production. Reduced supply from the Southern Pipeline and the Paphos dam raises concerns about farmers’ ability to cultivate new crops in the latter half of the year. “We urge the government to allocate a larger share of water resources to farmers to ensure adequate product supply for consumers,” Karyos added.

Farmers are calling for a review of government policy and additional support. “So far, they’ve only requested reports of heatwave damage for onion crops,” Karyos said. “They should extend this call to all affected products.”
