Hermes Airports, once again focusing on its environmental culture and with the aim of protecting the environment, proceeded to donate a training unmanned aircraft to the Department of Forestry.

Specifically, the object of the donation was designed and built by the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory of the Cyprus Institute, based on the corresponding specifications of the Forestry Department, and will contribute to the protection and conservation of Cyprus' forest resources. This initiative is part of Hermes Airports' efforts to promote sustainable development and strengthen efforts to protect the environment.

The donation is a continuation of the action that started last August with the project “The Green Lemonade”, where Hermes Airports staff collected lemons from the 120 lemon trees located outside the Larnaca airport, homemade lemonade was produced by KEAN, the which participates and supports the effort, and subsequently, the lemonade was made available for sale in the departures area of the airport. The proceeds from the sales were earmarked for environmental initiatives such as the donation of a thousand saplings and bushes to the public followed recently by the donation to the Forestry Department.

In a statement, Maria Kouroupi, Senior Communications Manager of Hermes Airports, said: “The collaboration with KEAN resulted in the 'Green' lemonade, an action that gave us the opportunity not only to contribute financially to initiatives that help the environment but also to sensitize the traveling public and wider society on these issues. We will continue to seek opportunities and allies to strengthen the efforts needed to protect the environment and achieve a more sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation industry.”

The Director of the Forestry Department Charalambos Alexandrou, after warmly thanking Hermes Airports for its offer, stated “The use of modern technological means, and in particular the use of unmanned aircraft, is expected to contribute catalytically to the further strengthening of the existing forest fire management system implemented by the Department of Forestry. The utilization of the unmanned aircraft granted to the Forestry Department by Hermes Airports will be used to train the members of the Department's Drones Team, thus contributing to the improvement of their operational capacity. Referring to the forest fires, he said that “This summer is expected to be particularly difficult in relation to forest fires due to the mild winter we had. In the event of a fire, the work of extinguishing the fire will be extremely difficult if it is not extinguished in the initial stages. With our slogan this year, “Only with a sense of responsibility”, we want to emphasize that we need the whole of society and that only by demonstrating responsibility and in practice, we can succeed. We want the public, first of all, not to become ambassadors of fire, or to help us in various other ways. We want the mindless to stop setting fires on purpose. As for our own responsibility, we categorically assure you that we will give the best of our power and that in any shortcomings we will propose our self-sacrifice in the performance of duty which we derive from our love for the forests”.

Maria Odysseos, Deputy Marketing Manager of KEAN, mentioned this in her statements. “We are very happy that the donation of an educational drone to the Department of Forestry by Hermes Airports is a continuation of the project “The Green Lemonade” that we ran together last August with the production of homemade lemonade by KEAN and the allocation of the proceeds for environmental purposes. Nature is the “home” of KEAN, the main supplier and the heart of the company, therefore its protection is of vital importance to us. That's why, within the framework of the company's comprehensive sustainable development program, we continuously support innovative initiatives that aim, among other things, to protect the environment”.

*The Green Lemonade Project is a joint campaign with KEAN, with the support of Cyprus Airports F&B and the company ICTS Cyprus. You can find more information here and watch the video of the whole process here or here.
