The adoption of the Cypriot proposals for “Fit for 55” is particularly important for air connectivity, says Hermes Airports.
Specifically, in its announcement, Hermes Airports welcomes the decision of the Transport Council and the EU Environment Council to adopt proposals submitted by the Minister of Transport of Cyprus, Mr. Giannis Karousos, to support air connectivity, in the framework of the agreement on its proposals. Noting that “having signed as the managing company of Larnaca and Paphos International Airports, already in 2019, the NetZero2050 commitment for zero emissions from Larnaca and Paphos airports by 2050, and most recently the corresponding Declaration of 250 European Toulouse airports, we fully share the European Authority 's ambitions to get rid of carbon dioxide emissions by the middle of the century, with actions that include targeted air transport measures. It is important, however, that the measures taken take into account the individual specificities of the island and regional Member States, in order to avoid unequal effects on the connectivity of countries such as Cyprus, which in turn will affect tourism and wider the economy “.
The company emphasizes in its announcement that, “In this context, we consider particularly important the decision of the European Ministers of Transport and Environment to adopt, in the text of the Legislative Package Fit-for-55, a series of proposals made by the Republic of Cyprus, through Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Giannis Karousou, who took the relevant initiative and made a persistent effort all this time in order to be crowned with success. These are key additions to the text of the revised Directive, such as the provision of the SAF Allowance Mechanism (SAF), which will curb rising costs of importing sustainable aviation fuels. Important for our country and is the special reference, in the Directive, to island states with a size of less than 10,000km, such as Cyprus, for which the difference in fuel costs will be covered 100% by a total subsidy of 0.5 billion euros, as well as the provision of a study that measures the consequences for the competitiveness of the economy and the connectivity of Cyprus. “These initiatives of the Republic of Cyprus are expected to significantly mitigate the impact of the Fit-for-55 legislative package on the air connectivity of our country and consequently on tourism.”
