High concentrations of dust in the atmosphere – “Attention to vulnerable groups is recommended”

High concentrations of dust are also observed in the atmosphere on Thursday, according to the measurements of the Ground Stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network of the Department of Labor Inspection.< /b>

The last hourly dust concentration values ​​measured at 07:00 in the following areas were: Nicosia 97.7 µg/m3, Limassol 83.0 µg/m3, Larnaca 86.6 µg/m3, Paralimni 29.0 µg/m3, Paphos 57.1 μg/m3, Zygi 70.4 μg/m3, Agia Marina Xyliatou 104.1 μg/m3. According to the relevant legislation the limit value refers to the average daily value and must not exceed the value of 50 μg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter).

As stated in an announcement by the Department of Labor Inspection, because the dust contains small-sized inhalable particles, which may have a negative effect on human health, the public and especially vulnerable population groups (children, the elderly and the sick) are urged to avoid circulating in open areas until the phenomenon passes.

Employers, states the competent Department, based on its provisions on Safety and Health at Work (Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons in Work During Dust Episodes) Decree of 2022 (C.D.P. 410/2022), must take the appropriate measures (organizational or technical), after assessing the risks for their employees who are in open spaces, and workers in such areas are recommended to use appropriate personal protective equipment.

It is noted that “dust” means respirable suspended particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than 10 µm (PM10).
